The paper presents a new approach for model–based diagnosis for hierarchically structured discrete–event systems. The efficiency of this method results from the fact that the complexity of the diagnostic task is reduced by first detecting and identifying a faulty module using a coarse model of the system on a high level of abstraction and subsequently refining the diagnostic results by using a detailed model of the underlying module. On each abstraction level, the method uses timed automata obtained from the timed event graphs as a model of the discrete–event systems for diagnosis. The effectiveness of this diagnostic approach is applied to the manufacturing process.
